Description

Jin, a member of the "Maboroshi" biker community, is determined to stand firm against the pressures from both within his group, who wish to adopt a more socially acceptable image, and external organizations attempting to influence them. His resistance comes at a significant personal cost, leading to the loss of his right hand. However, even at his lowest point, Jin remains resilient. Equipped with a specialized suit, he embarks on a journey to the legendary Thunder Road for one final confrontation.

Director's Biography - ISHII Gakuryu

Born in 1957 in Fukuoka Prefecture, formerly known as Sogo Ishii. ISHII Gakuryu is a film director and became a leading figure in the Japanese New Wave with his university graduation project, Crazy Thunder Road. His notable directorial works include Burst City, The Crazy Family, 1/2 Man, Angel Dust, August in the Water, Labyrinth of Dreams, Electric Dragon 80000V, Gojoe, That's It, and Punk Samurai Slash Down. His latest film, The Box Man, starring Masatoshi Nagase, will be released in Japan on August 23, 2024. He served as a professor in the film course at Kobe Design University from 2006 until stepping away from his position in March 2023.

From punk-infused chaos to hauntingly beautiful psychological explorations, ISHII’s work remains an influential and distinctive voice in Japanese and global cinema. Director ISHII willl be sharing about his filmmaking journey and the influences which shaped his films. Moreover, he will be talking about his latest feature film THE BOX MAN, adapted from a novvel by influential Japanese author Kobo ABE. Audiences will also be able to participate in a Q&A segment after his sharing.


The Masterclass will be moderated by filmmaker and educator Jesmen TAN.
