The Moon Has Risen – 4K Restoration

月は上りぬ

Description

*SOUTHEAST ASIAN PREMIERE*

Based on a screenplay co-written by OZU Yasujirō and SAITO Ryôsuke (who also worked together on the 1948 film A Hen in the Wind, starring TANAKA Kinuyo), TANAKA’s second directorial work is a lightly-comedic drama about a widower and the romantic prospects of his three daughters, set against the backdrop of the bucolic town of Nara.

Engaging with some of the distinctive features of OZU’s cinema, such as the use of the famed tatami shot (where the camera is placed close to ground, at eye-level of a person kneeling on a traditional tatami mat) and casting OZU regular, RYU Chishû (Tokyo Story), in the lead role of the father, TANAKA pays sincere homage to the veteran filmmaker, while masterfully drawing out a unique sense vigour and charm through her precise command of performance and cinematography.
