This sophisticated, layered book adaptation by Japanese director SODE Yukiko shows contemporary Tokyo from the differing perspectives of two women. SODE manages to beautifully deconstruct the typical woman-meets-man story by placing the emphasis on solidarity, identity, background and class.
A love triangle involves an aristocratic lawyer and two women – Hanako (KADOWAKI Mugi) is a wealthy Tokyoite while Miki (MIZUHARA Kiko) is a college dropout working two jobs. Director SODE Yukiko chooses to highlight the commonality between two polar opposites – the need to fulfil the unspoken traditional expectations of women in modern Japan. Gently dissecting the nuances of class division with sparing sentiments, and what is left is the undeniable truth that there is no escape from the formality of marriage. But maybe happiness can be found elsewhere.
